  1. This major study indicates that same sex marriage has the same or better benefit for children ( http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/tick-for-samesex-families-20130605-2npxf.html ). I don't think we want to start deciding who can have children, however, because of studies.

  2. Rationalist: Agreed. Interestingly enough, so does the author of this study who goes further in stating that the statistical analysis he did on this subject should have no bearing on whether or not same-sex unions should be legalized. He was simply pointing out something that he discovered among the data collected from studying marriage as an institution for the past 10+ years which he believed has been overlooked by the other studies you referenced. Personally I think that the argument which says the most children in gay parented families are also children who suffered the divorce of their parents is of far greater weight when it comes to determining future successes such as graduating from high school.

  3. Thanks for your response. These types of studies need to be done, if done at all, with the greatest of care. There is so much potential, and indeed incentive on both sides, for distorting the results, consciously or unconsciously. I would approach these studies with the same care one was studying, say, the effect of children of mixed race marriages.

In my experience, only anecdotal by looking at the other families around me, children are very conservative and don't like changes like divorce and remarriage. They want stability and assurances at home. And two loving caring parents who put children firt, not parents, are the best enviornment. Even in cases of divorce, if the parents can put their difficulties aside when dealing with the children, it is so much better.

About 20 years ago on the CBC they had a story about a couple in Quebec who divorced and they decided that the children should keep the house. Rather than the children shuffle back and forth every few weeks the divorcing parents set up two extra apartments and every two weeks would swap into the house with the children. That's putting children first.
